How To Start A Skin Routine With Dermalogica Age Smart

We chat to Dermalogica skin therapist Emma about premature ageing, Age Smart products, a bit of science about the ageing process and the six step routine for skincare.

Premature Ageing

So… premature ageing signs might not be obvious. This is because it is happening underneath the skin so we can't necessarily see it or the damage that's occurred under there and that's starting to evolve, but it generally it’s things like sun damage, and the cells slowing down. It’s not until the time we reach late twenties and early thirties that we might start to see the ageing process become apparent.

It's not that the skin has just started to age, it's always been ageing, but at that point we're able to see the actual effects of the ageing process come to the surface, the damage that we've accumulated underneath.

So when does ageing start? Right, this isn’t meant to alarm you, but skin therapist Emma starts off by telling us that premature ageing actually happens from the day we are born. From the minute we are born, our skin and our bodies are exposed to light, and vitamin, external pollutants, and really from our diet from that day forward as well. See, premature ageing isn’t the same as the natural ageing process.

When we talk about premature ageing, we are talking about the effects of the environment and all those other factors on our skin. And it isn’t just something that happens in our younger years. Alongside the natural ageing process, deepening lines and wrinkle can be a sign that our skin needs a bit of help to be the healthy and remarkable you!

Dermalogica Age Smart Range

A pretty cool name… which skin therapist Emma tells us has two meanings – firstly it sums up Dermalogica’s desire to help you to get smart about the decision you make on skincare for your skin, helping you to understand your skin to best know how to treat it. And secondly, the Age Smart Range is really unique in the technology it uses, it’s a really smart way to look after and care for ageing skin.

So what do all the Dermalogica Age Smart products have in common?

Skin therapist Emma tells us the Dermalogica Age Smart range are linked by two factors:

Ingredients – a cocktail of vitamins and minerals to help ageing skin and to combat the effects of environment on the skin
Technology – the delivery system used to get those vitamins and minerals deep into the layers of your skin that need them most

MMPs and the Ageing Process

So one of the things we love most about Dermalogica is that they share our passion for skin education. Not content with just selling us skin care products we don’t understand the beenfots of, Dermalogica want us to be age-smart – to understand what the active ingredients in the products you are using are doing for your skin.

That sometimes mean they use terms we haven’t heard of before! Which is a part of skin education. Like MMPs.

What are MMPs?

Basically, a very long word - Matrix Metalloproteinases, which is why we call them MMPs!

Matrix Metalloproteinases are enzymes that degrade your skin tissue. This matters because as you get older skin tissue is so, so important to the surface appearance of the skin. Without it our skin appearance is much rougher, much more uneven and also slows down the healing process. As we age the skin naturally thins and we lose the ability to be able to heal as quickly.

What have MMPs got to do with anything?

Well when you see things like red veins and broken capillaries appearing on the surface of your skin. That’s the result of MMPs – they are enzymes that get in there, degrade that tissue and make that process happen.

We do have natural MMP inhibitors within our bodies but as with everything as we age, they naturally degrade. Dermalogica Age Smart products are designed to help to stop that process happening again. Ingredients like retinol, which is a normalizer helps to inhibit the MMPs, so once the enzymes start the action of degrading tissue, the vitamin A goes in and normalises the tissue.

What is Glycation?

Now for another bit of science… glycation stops the process of collagen dividing in the skin. Glycation happens when glucose gets into the body, through carbohydrates and your diet and enters the blood stream. When glucose hits the skin cells it looks for proteins, like collagen, and it looks to degrade these proteins. The glycation process essentially eats away at your collagen.

Dermalogica Age Smart has sugar traps – ingredients that prevent and control the process of glycation. So, the molecules often appear the same as collagen would look like, so that when that glycation process starts to happen, it happens to these molecules rather than the collagens. Clever stuff!

Steps 1 and 2 - Double-Cleanse
