Why do I need to use an SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor'. Using an SPF not just in the summer is key to protecting our skin and here's why:
SPFs can be described as 'broad spectrum'. This means they help protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays that are emitted from the sun. We generally think of using SPFs to help protect our skin from burning in the summer months when we typically experience hotter and sunnier weather. The UVB (B for burning) rays from the sun burn and damage our skin. They also help protect our skin from UVA rays (A for ageing). These rays are emitted from the sun all year round from dawn til dusk whatever the weather. They can also penetrate glass, windows and clouds. UVA rays penetrate deep into our skin and we cannot see their effects until we hit our 30s, 40s and beyond. The effects of their damage if then often seen by fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, premature ageing and even worse, skin cancer.
Simply put, SPFs should be part of our skincare routine all year round.
There are 2 main types of SPFs available, chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreen absorb the rays from the sun and transform them into heat by a chemical reaction. That heat is then released from the skin or dissipated into our tissues. Physical sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit on the surface of the skin and reflect the suns rays away from the skin.
